International House Darwin’s Annual Ball – celebrating our residents

On Saturday 19 August, residents and staff members gathered for our annual end of year event to celebrate the year that was.

The annual ball is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize IHD residents and this year was no different. It was a great opportunity to celebrate a few stand out members in the community.

The International Houses (IH) concept began in 1909 when New Yorker Harry Edmonds struck up a conversation with a Chinese student on the street. Upon hearing the student hadn’t had a conversation with anyone since arriving three weeks before, an aghast Edmonds went about creating a sense of community for international students. The first IH opened in New York just after WWI.

To honour the work of Harry Edmonds, IHD presents an award each year in his name.

This year’s winner is Ann Gigi.

The Resident of the Year award recognises the efforts of an individual who exemplifies positive engagement in the community. Selected by fellow residents, this year’s award went to Devika Nair

A big congratulations also goes to Sansar Buhda who received the Community Service award, to Marika Moala who received the Community Spirit Award.
