Alumni story: Aman’s journey has just begun

Aman arrived in Darwin from India in 2017 to study a Masters in IT, Software Engineering. It was during his time here that his passions evolved, and he ended up working at International House Darwin. From 2019-2022 Aman was the Resident Engagement Officer creating events for residents. Since wrapping up in the role late last year, we thought it was fitting we capture his story.

Aman first decided to study at Charles Darwin University because two of his friends were coming to Darwin. He had never heard of Darwin, but little did he know the impact his time at IHD would have on his life.

“Back in 2017 when I was applying for CDU, I had no idea about the city of Darwin. I only knew places in Australia that had cricket stadiums as I am a cricket fan. But coming to Darwin and IHD was the best decision I ever made.”

Making friends from around the world

During his time studying, Aman also lived at International House Darwin (IHD) and it was during this time he forged some beautiful friendships with students from all over the world.

“I made friendships here that will last forever. Recently in December 2022, some of my IHD friends made it to my wedding. Friends from Australia, Denmark came to witness my Indian wedding.”

Darwin is more than just a destination, it’s an experience!

Aman says studying in Darwin is a unique and vibrant place to study.

“The NT is beautiful, Darwin is amazing and IHD is a world within CDU. The friendships you will make here will stay forever. Darwin can be a great choice for students who are looking for a unique study experience in a multicultural city with a strong outdoor culture and access to stunning natural attractions. It is a relatively small city, but it is a vibrant and multicultural city with much to offer students.”

Aman loved working and living in Darwin, while studying at CDU Aman was a Resident Leader at IHD. As a Resident Leader he enjoyed bringing people together through events. He won awards, Community Support 2017, and Harry Edmonds Award in 2018. It was because of this, Aman ended up working at IHD as the Resident Engagement Officer (REO) from 2019 – 2022. During his time as REO, Covid hit – and like many Aman pivoted and thought of creative ways students could connect. It was during this time Aman established virtual games against International Houses from all over the world.

Parting words for prospective students

Aman suggests that prospective students should give Darwin a go.

“Darwin can be a great choice for students who are looking for a unique study experience in a multicultural city. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping. Darwin also has a thriving arts and culture scene, with regular festivals and events.”
