Resident Snapshot: Viktor & Ella – Swedish exchange students

About Viktor (left): Viktor Tiger is from Sweden and has been living at IHD since the second semester of 2024. As an exchange student, Viktor will stay at IHD for one semester before returning to Sweden to complete his studies.

About Ella (second from right): Ella Runnquist, also from Sweden, is currently studying business and economics at CDU for one semester, with a major in marketing back home.

Curiosity brought Viktor and Ella to Darwin, Australia

The warm weather is definitely one of the main reasons they are both here. Darwin’s tropical climate is a stark contrast to Sweden’s cold, so they both want to enjoy a semester in the warmth. Ella has always wanted to visit Australia, inspired by her cousin who lives there and has shared many fascinating stories. Viktor’s motivation is a bit different. As an explorer, he seeks out places that are completely new to him (except for the language). He is eager to experience a destination he never imagined visiting and to explore the differences.

“Food is a way to say welcome like shaking hands here” – Ella

Ella and Viktor have found that the IHD residents and staff are exceptionally kind and supportive, which is a striking difference to their previous university experiences back home. They’ve been invited to try a variety of wonderful foods and share stories with the residents. They really appreciate how open everyone is to new experiences and their eagerness to learn different languages. The attitude toward sharing and connecting with others is something both Ella and Viktor find quite different from Sweden. This welcoming atmosphere has opened doors to meaningful conversations and new connections for them.

A lovely experience where I have met friends for life and grew a lot as a person

Living on campus shortens commuting time, and if you want to meet someone, they can be there in a few minutes. Everything here is different, but in a good way. Ella mentioned that she didn’t have to share the bathroom and kitchen back home, however, she shares all the common facilities here. They both see this as a positive, as sharing spaces brings everyone together and gives them opportunities to meet and interact with other residents. Viktor and Ella agree that the accommodation is welcoming and warm, offering a positive experience.

Attend IHD Events as much as possible!

IHD is always keen to organize a variety of activities and trips to provide the best experience for residents who are looking to take a break from their busy study schedules. For Ella, the most memorable event was the Litchfield trip, she couldn’t resist the stunning swimming pools and beautiful nature. Viktor also enjoys the trips, but his most memorable experience so far was listening to other residents’ stories from diverse cultural backgrounds during IHD Story Night. Both agree that participating in these events has greatly enriched their time at IHD.
