Bethmi is part of International House Darwin’s (IHD) Resident Leader (RL) team.
She has been an RL for more than one semester, she really enjoys hosting events alongside her fellow RLs. Bethmi is originally from Sri Lanka and has been living at IHD since 2023, she’s expected to graduate this semester and complete her Master of Public Health.
Building strong connections with residents
Building strong connections with others in your neighborhood can provide valuable support when you need it most. Bethmi, having felt the warmth and support of the IHD community during her first year as a resident, was inspired to pay it forward and help create that same inclusive atmosphere for new students.
“I always encourage residents to participate in various events and connect with each other, drawing from my own memories of attending such gatherings. Among them, the Sri Lanka New Year celebration stands out as particularly memorable. It offered me an opportunity to share Sri Lankan culture, bridge cultural divides, and foster mutual understanding among residents. In doing so, I not only enriched the community but also rediscovered and strengthened my own cultural roots.”
My experience at IHD has been incredibly enriching
Being away from home was challenging for Bethmi, as it was her first time moving away from her family, but she adjusted faster than she expected, the IHD staff and residents made this transition much easier. Being welcomed by residents from diverse backgrounds fostered a sense of community in her new home away from home. The tropical climate in Darwin, similar to where she comes from, also helped ease the transition.
The sunsets are breathtaking, and beaches are simply beautiful
Beaches are just a stone’s throw away, and Bethmi has taken
many photos with her dog while walking along the shore. The beautiful sunset has a magical way of washing away the exhaustion of a long day filled with study and work.
The gentle waves and golden hues of the setting sun create a serene and picturesque backdrop, making every moment spent there feel special.
