My placement at IHD has been a tremendous learning experience
Bismita was encouraged by the CDU Career Centre to join the AWEsome program, where she had the opportunity to work in a diverse environment like IHD. Her primary goals were to enhance her communication skills, build a network, and develop proficiency in workplace interactions. She claims to have gained much more than she expected; it has been a remarkable working experience.
“Working with a team of ten members at IHD, I had the privilege of collaborating with and getting to know everyone. All the staff members were extremely friendly and welcoming. ”
A big thank you to all IHD staff
She mentioned that she has learned a lot from each staff member, including but not limited to customer service at the front desk, software knowledge, interpersonal skills, and housekeeping services. She expressed special thanks to her supervisor, Nurul, the Manager of IHD, who made a significant impact on her. Nurul’s guidance and support have been invaluable throughout her placement. Nurul’s approachability and willingness to share her extensive knowledge greatly contributed to Bismita’s personal and professional growth.
During the IHD Welcome Day for Semester 2, 2024, Bismita was encouraged to share her experiences with new residents from different cultural backgrounds. She discussed her life in Darwin, studying at CDU, and working at IHD. She felt grateful to work with so many talented people and appreciated the opportunity to immerse herself in a real working environment. After finishing her study, Bismita hopes to find a job where she can apply what she has learned in practice while also giving back to society.
Make the best use of all resources available to you
A piece of advice from Bismita:
“Make the best use of all resources available to you while you study at CDU. Visit the Career Centre and utilize library support, attend networking events, and pitch your career path to maximize your learning and opportunities.”
Bismita Khatiwada is originally from Nepal and is currently undertaking a Master of Environmental Management at Charles Darwin University (CDU). After earning a Bachelor of Science in her home country, she decided to follow her passion for nature by enrolling in the Environmental Management program at CDU, a decision that has proven to be one of the best she has ever made. Bismita has been working with International House Darwin (IHD) for four weeks, and this week marks the completion of a 50-hour AWEsome placement with IHD.
