For those who are new to Darwin the start of semester may be a challenging time. For some of you, it will be your first time away from home and you might feel overwhelmed with it all.
It is very normal to feel like you are on an emotional rollercoaster. There are ups and downs for everyone in a new place. It’s especially understandable for new students who’ve uprooted their lives to start university in different country/territory.
Below are some tips on tackling homesickness.
Take life one step at a time
Look at short term targets first, focus on them before you focus on the long-term goals. It’s great to write out your goals.
Reward yourself
Celebrate your milestones! Reward yourself for reaching targets.
Stay connected to home
Live in the now, be present, and share stories with loved ones back home.
Be social
Connect with others and join in activities and events. Request to join the IHD Community Facebook page. Or check out the What’s On page to be across all the activities International House Darwin is hosting.
Get help
If you are struggling with homesickness, get help. You can speak to the Coordinator of Resident Services or Resident Engagement officer who can offer some guidance.
